Dylan Jones (Editor) May was another exceptional month for data quality blogging. What's even more encouraging is that we're witnessing new bloggers taking the plunge by kicking off their own blogs with 3 new data quality related blogs being launched this month alone.
NOTE: To help any of our readers or members who are interested in launching their own blog but need help with the technicalities and planning we will be launching a new Support Hub that caters for this topic.
This will provide a wealth of practical tips and resources to help you get your blog launched, generating traffic and becoming a part of the wider data quality community. More on that later in the week.
Here are some of the standout blog posts of the month. If we missed you, drop us a line and we'll try and sneak you into this edition or slot you in next month:
- IAIDQ Festival del IDQ Bloggers - Episode #2 : Daragh O Brien hosts this month IDQ carnival sponsored by the IAIDQ, featuring 7 great entries from across the data quality blogosphere. Steve Sarsfield is the host for the next edition so check out this page for how to get your June posts shortlisted.
- Begin at the end … ensuring data quality success! : William Sharp kicks off his new data quality blog (DQ Chronicle) with a thoughtful post providing practical advice on how to get the business bought into the future success of data quality improvement.
- Traditional Insurance Pricing - A Data Quality Perspective : Jeremy Benson launches his data quality blog in fine form with a post on his specialist topic of data quality in the insurance industry, this post looks at some of the challenges data quality inflicts on traditional pricing.
- B2B vs. B2C Matching for Sales and Marketing & Are You Spamming Your Customers? : Mark Goloboy kicked off his blog that will focus on "Commentary on Data Governance, Marketing Technology and Web Analytics". There were a number of great posts from Mark this month but we found these to be both insightful and practical, definitely a blog to keep coming back to.
- Schrödinger's Data Quality & The Nine Circles of Data Quality Hell : Jim Harris and his OCDQ Blog have been flat out this month creating some great content as ever. Jim is also becoming recognised as an invaluable data quality journalist, his
- TDWI World Conference Chicago 2009 write up was also a standout post this month so definitely a blog to add to your RSS reader.
- Data Governance – the Movie & Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, Except in Data Quality : Steve Sarsfield found time away from his Data Governance book launch to write several really insightful posts this month. The second post we listed would sit equally well on our Data Migration Pro sister site as a reminder of the importance of effective data quality management during migration projects.
- Antipodean Bankers Sheepish over Overdraft Bungle (Again) : The IQ Trainwrecks.com site is never short of content and this month was no exception particularly amongst the banking industry which always seem to be well represented on the site.
- Entry Point: Change is a Constant & DQ is 1/3 Process Knowledge + 1/3 Business Knowledge + 1/3 Intuition : Daniel Gent's Data Quality Edge Blog had some great posts this month, the first one listed here is particularly valuable as it gives us a timely reminder of the importance of information chain management, something that is sadly lacking in most organisations.
- How Microsoft Access can damage your data quality & What about the rest of the data? : Global name and address expert Graham Rhind provides some practical advice for MS-Access data users plus he opens up the debate on the "Fortune 1,000,000" organisations we often forget about in data quality circles.
- The Growing Role of Identity Resolution in MDM : Dan Power publishes a guest this month on the excellent Identity Resolution Daily blog. Dan discusses the growing importance of identity resolution, both in its impact on the MDM market and our everyday lives.
- Competing on Data Quality : Julianna DeLua posts a reminder of the importance data quality has in helping organisations understand their customers and outsmart their competitors.
- What's in a name? : Stefanos Damianakis writes great posts, this one highlights some of the conflicting challenges posed by terrorist watchlist searches.
- Data Quality Correction Strategies: Rob Reynolds presents an interesting approach to data correction in data warehouse and analytical data stores.
- How Bad is Your Data Quality? : An interesting post by Brian Larkin that provides statistics clearly demonstrating how poor data quality directly impacts the bottom line of retailers.
- Web Data Quality: A 6 Step Process To Evolve Your Mental Model : It's important to remember that not all data resides in databases, in this excellent post by Avinash Kaushik we are presented with a practical approach to making faster, smarter decisions with web analytics data.
- Managing Customers’ Data Quality Expectations : Dave Turpin provides a useful post based on recent experiences with change of address issues and why there is no single solution, a holistic approach is pivotal.
