Data Profiling Tutorial (With Free Data Quality Software) - Lesson 1

The aim of this tutorial series is to set a data quality challenge that is typical in modern business. By giving you a detailed workbook and all the technology required, you will be able to deliver a complete data profiling assessment with management recommendations.

The Plot

WonderMart are a (fictional) retail chain that sell household grocery products.

The Head of Beverage Marketing for WonderMart, receives a regular sales performance report of the Ground Coffee business division straight to her reporting dashboard (as seen below).

Historically, she received a basic two-page printed report based on simple metrics.

However, since the introduction of the new business intelligence reporting tool that now takes data from a more detailed data mart she has begun to notice anomalies in the data.

The Task

You have been asked to perform a data profiling assessment of the coffee sales data mart to ascertain whether: 

1. There are issues present in the data
2. How many issues exist and what is their likely cause
3. What impact these issues may have on management decisions
4. What possible courses of action to take 

The Tools

You have been provided with the following: 

Real life set of business data in a CSV (comma separated) format from a data-mart that contains all the Beverage sales for WonderMart across the Ground Coffee segment.

Free data quality software that features a full array of data profiling, business rules analysis and data connectivity features, courtesy of DQ Analyzer, supplied free from Ataccama.

Detailed series of step-by-step tutorials to help you complete your task.
